DMAS questions for class 5 ( NUMERICAL EXPRESSIONS WITHOUT BRACKETS )

**DMAS RULE**

DMAS rule is followed when multiple arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are present in a given mathematical expression. In ‘DMAS’, D stands for division, M for multiplication, A for addition, and S for subtraction. DMAS represents the order of operations. When a mathematical expression involving all four operations is given, we solve these operations in the order:

- Division 2. Multiplication 3. Addition 4. Subtraction

For example, consider the following cases.

**Example: Simplify: 5 + 4 × 3 – 9 ÷ 3**

Sol. In this example, all the four operations are there, so we have to use DMAS rule.

5+ 4 × 3 – 9 ÷ 3= 5 + 4 × 3 – 3 (Division: 9 ÷ 3 = 3)

= 5 + 12 – 3 (Multiplication: 4 × 3 = 12)

= 17 – 3 (Addition: 5 + 12 = 17)

= 14 (Subtraction: 17 – 3 = 14)

**Example : Simplify using DMAS rule 5 x 3 +8 ÷ 4**

Solution. 5 x 3 +8 ÷ 4= 5 x 3 +8 ÷ 4

= 5 x 3 +2

=15+2

=17

Simplify the following numerical expressions:

**(i) 28-3 x 5 +4**

Sol. 28-3 x 5 +4=28-15+4

=32-15

=17

**(ii) 15-3 x 4 ÷2+2**

Sol. 15-3 x 4 ÷2+2= 15-3 x 2+2

=15-6+2

=17-6

=11

**(iii) 39-18÷3+2 x 3**

Sol. 39-18÷3+2 x 3 =39-6+2 x 3

=39-6+6

=45-6

=39

**(iv) 5 x 8-6 ÷2**

Sol. 5 x 8 -6 ÷2=5 x 8-3

=40-3

=37

**(v) 15÷5 x 4 ÷ 2**

Sol. 15÷5 x 4 ÷ 2=3 x 2

=6

**(vi)10+8÷4-2 x 6**

Sol. 10+8÷4-2 x 6=10+2-2 x 6

=10+2-12

=12-12

=0

**(vii)42-18 ÷2 x 3**

Sol. 42-18 ÷2 x 3=42-9 x 3

=42-27

=15

**(viii) 5 ÷ 5 +6 x 6**

Sol. 5 ÷ 5 +6 x 6=1 +6 x 6

=1+36

=37

**(ix) 7 × 3 – 4 + 60 ÷ 10**

Sol. 7 × 3 – 4 + 60 ÷ 10= 7 × 3 – 4 + 6

= 21 – 4 + 6

= 27 – 4

= 23

**(x) 18+4×6÷2-9**

Sol. 18+4×6÷2-9=18+4×3-9

=18+12-9

=30-9

=21

**(xi) 128÷ 4 +12 x 5 -4**

Sol. 128÷ 4 +12 x 5 -4= 32+12 x 5 -4 (solving ÷)

=32+60-4 (Solving x )

= 92-4 (solving + )

= 88 (solving -)

**(xii) 49÷ 7 x 7 +5 x 3 – 2**

Sol. 49÷ 7 x 7 +5 x 3 – 2= 7 x 7 +5 x 3 – 2

=49 + 15 -2

=64-2

=62

**(xiii) 10+12÷ 4+2 x 9 -10**

Sol. 10+12÷ 4+2 x 9 -10= 10+3+2 x 9 -10

= 10+3+18-10

= 31-10

= 21

**(xiv) 57 x 50 +57 -57÷57**

Sol. 57 x 50 +57 -57÷57 =57 x 50 +57 -1

=2850+57-1

=2907-1

=2906

**(xv) 289+153÷17-8 x 19 **

Sol. 289+153÷17-8 x 19 = 289+9-8 x 19

=289+ 9-152

=298-152

=146

**(xvi) 100 x 10-100+2000÷100**

Sol. 100 x 10-100+2000÷100= 100 x 10-100+20

=1000-100+20

=1020-100

=920

**(xvii) 30÷ 6+10-2 x 5**

Sol. 30÷ 6+10-2 x 5=5+10-2 x 5

=5+10-10

=15-10

=5

**(xviii) 48÷16 x 2 +17-9**

Sol. 48÷16 x 2 +17-9=3 x 2 +17-9

=6+17-9

=23-9

=14

**(xix)12 x 3 ÷ 3 x 4 -2+6**

Sol. 12 x 3 ÷ 3 x 4 -2+6 =12 x 1 x 4 -2+6

=48-2+6

=54-2

=52

**(xx) 121÷ 11+29-2 x 10**

Sol. 121÷ 11+29-2 x 10= 11+29-2 x 10

=11+29-20

=40-20

=20
